FAQ: What type of Maps does Starlight use?
Starlight maps are in the GeoTiff format. GeoTIFF is a commonly used public domain metadata standard which allows georeferencing information to be embedded within a TIFF file. This additional information includes projections, coordinate systems, and everything else necessary to establish an exact coordinate system for the image.
JPEG, GIF, or BMP files which lack the georeferencing metadata cannot be used in Starlight, unless converted to GeoTiff.
Other file types, such as "shape files" (*.shp) and GML files (*.gml), may be used to add supplementary GIS layers on top of the base map.
